Then I realised something even more sinister in context. I have always since the age of around fifteen existed in a world where if I didn't know something, I could Google it, search for it, find it and learn how to do it (the basics at least - enough to get me going). It occurs to me that now the primary function of search on the Internet is not to impart knowledge but to sell product this is having a top-down effect on the ability of those existing, growing up, in this world to learn new things. They've sold out free information for profit. They've sold out education for commerce. People are not getting less smart. The information is becoming more regulated and harder to find. This was always one of the fears - stated in the 90s many times. ... and it has gradually come to pass. Information as an asset class is harmful to us all, and to our future.
