As you walk past them in the street and you catch eye contact for a moment sometimes there is a hint of -more-. Looking as I do, doing as I do, people are fast to label me 'other' and in the same way those who once were themselves see this as a beacon - they call out to it from sad eyes. A brief reminder of home. I often wonder what it was that dragged them under, some of them permanently, into the depths of the construct. What changed them from being what they were to what they are now? Was it the demands of society? A broken heart? A lost battle... a lost will? It's unfortunate that I'll never know without asking - and even then if I did most won't want to be asked and won't answer. The truth is they forget themselves. This is why they are... the lost. - Tengushee @Tengushee =============================================================================== ____ ____ ____ ____ _________ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ||D |||A |||T |||A ||| |||F |||E |||E |||D |||S || ||__|||__|||__|||__|||_______|||__|||__|||__|||__|||__|| |/__\|/__\|/__\|/__\|/_______\|/__\|/__\|/__\|/__\|/__\| =============================================================================== https://trends.google.com/trends/trendingsearches/daily/rss http://liminal.earth/feed/ http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundcloud:users:44273240/sounds.rss http://cyberpunkonline.net/rss https://eris.media/rss.xml https://audioboom.com/channels/4954758.rss https://news.google.com/rss/search?q=cyberpunk https://news.google.com/rss/search?q=cyberpunkonline https://www.google.com/alerts/feeds/01956812613236172088/3771766199752494152 https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder.rss http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/.rss http://www.reddit.com/r/cyberpunk/.rss http://www.reddit.com/r/rpg/.rss http://www.reddit.com/r/startrek/.rss https://store.steampowered.com/feeds/newreleases.xml http://aminet.net/feed.php?arch%5B%5D=generic&get=Get+feed https://feeds.a.dj.com/rss/RSSWSJD.xml https://www.neondystopia.com/feed/ https://digitalartcollector.com/feed/ https://mzx.io/nux/feed/ https://bloody-disgusting.com/feed/ https://foon.uk/feeds/rss.xml https://folklorethursday.com/rss http://www.penkilnburn.com/feed/ https://intotheforestdark.wordpress.com/feed/ https://undeadauthorsociety.com/feed/ http://feeds.feedburner.com/OpenCulture https://ultraculture.org/feed/ https://futurism.com/feed/ https://sardonicusblog.com/feed/ https://spartalien.com/news.rss http://www.sofmag.com/feed/ https://nexusmagazine.com/feed/ https://locusmag.com/feed/ http://archive.org/services/collection-rss.php?query=subject:cyberpunk http://archive.org/services/collection-rss.php?query=subject:new%20aesthetic http://archive.org/services/collection-rss.php?query=subject:fairy http://archive.org/services/collection-rss.php?query=subject:fae http://archive.org/services/collection-rss.php?query=subject:faerie http://archive.org/services/collection-rss.php?query=subject:cult http://archive.org/services/collection-rss.php?query=subject:discordian =============================================================================== T H E D A T A D R U G THE FIFTH ALBUM FROM TENGUSHEE Including the 'Spiritu Dei Sub Terra' poetry anthology https://www.tengushee.com/datadrug =============================================================================== ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ |E |||X |||T |||R |||A || |__|||__|||__|||__|||__|| /__\|/__\|/__\|/__\|/__\| =============================================================================== Spiritu Dei Sub Terra --------------------- Society... it's everywhere. You are born to it, you live in it, and you will one day die in it. In 2021 it would be very difficult to operate as a human without adhering to at least some (and in the cases of most people... all) of the social contracts and norms of society. There is a caveat to this universal constant. Just underneath society something always lurks. Under the ground. It's always hidden unless you dig for it, many of those above the ground never glimpse it, some are even unaware of its existence in totality. The lurking dark is usually in some stark opposition to that which is above the ground and certainly different from it. Enough to cause offence. Enough to cause fear. Enough to be 'other'. It is in a very real way an often (but not always) silent battleground between those who enjoy the perceived comforts of conformity and those who feel constrained by it (sometimes drastically). When the United Kingdom in the 80s and early 90s deemed 'rave culture' and indeed 'rave music' a menace they forced the movement underground by passing laws specifically targeting the culture (outdoor raves) and the genre (repetitive beats) within a new 'Criminal Justice Act'. The response to this from the already partially underground culture of the ravers was personified in audio by the Prodigy track 'Their Law' ("Fuck 'em, and their law"). They had been made 'other' in totality by society and as a response they chose to embrace this rather than shed that which made them different (the culture they had created and adopted as ravers) - many of the hard-core from this subculture, movement or fringe went on to become travellers and exist even further outside of societal norms than they would otherwise have done. This is how underground subcultures are born and how they evolve. Oppression cements division and strengthens culture through conflict. Sometimes these underground movements are characterised by a want of those involved to hide from or otherwise avoid authority - sometimes they are characterised by the movements seeking to challenge or fight authority as an 'end goal' - perhaps even the fabled 'revolution'. Often they contain elements of both trains of thought and are limited in terms of the ability to execute either (something which has become more of a struggle in the age of the surveillance state) - it is within this mess of ideas and objectives that vibrant communities are created and sustained underground. This happens all the time and each time it does these communities leave a mark in art and even on the mainstream. They become, in a way, legend. Perhaps the best example of this is the Cyberpunk subculture which has never really had any individual manifesto (indeed it is many subcultures upon close analysis) but which over time has solidified as something in the mainstream recognise on sight. The cyberpunk renaissance was first termed such in around 2011 - and it followed through to a whole raft of mainstream media spectacles over the follow decade. Once established the myths of the underground linger in the peripheral vision of wider society and sometimes they burst from the ground for brief periods of exposure. Rarely they are fully embraced by the mainstream society and become part of it - are assimilated by it - the fighting, the hiding, the resistance unfortunately melts away as a side effect of this, Subcultures which go mainstream are appropriated and often lose their spark and attraction to long terms adherents who are left out in the cold marginalised by that which they once based their identity around. The NFT scene in 2020s is a grand example of an underground scene emerging before our eyes into a renaissance event - having been built formally 'below ground' it emerges now and faces all the challenges associated with that. From my personal perspective as a long term observer of such things in this instance I see it as if the early 70s freak power movement (Hunter Thompson at Aspen etc.) had a baby with the Dadaists... while William Gibson watches through a crack in the door... dressed as a furry. It's very different to society at large, and it now faces 'the merging' where those from the outside will attempt to bring their ideals inside and those inside will attempt to defend against the outside ideals which are in particular opposition with what they feel is the spirit of the underground driving the, in the artistic sense, happening. Which raises the question; what is the 'spirit of the underground'? I mentioned earlier that the underground often leaves a mark, casts a shadow, in the mainstream even if it does remain underground - these can be small, or huge. The true test of the validity and previous often forgotten strength of a movement can be measured in that which it leaves behind for history to unravel. Some art, incidents, sounds, words will resound for centuries - it is these which represent the spirit of the underground. Almost always; the hide, the fight, the resistance. Some notable examples from my perspective are as follows: A chronological list of some very varied underground influences which have stood the test of time (far from complete, more a tasting menu). These may or may not have influenced me over time. - Tao - Zen - Crowley - Dadism - Alan Watts - Discordiansm - Johnny Cash - Hunter S Thompson - Alan Moore - 16bit Demo & Pirate Loaders - Neal Stephenson - The KLF - The Prodigy In summary it is the ability to resound outside of your originating generation and or to consistently trigger people back to their most reactionary and defiant which defines true underground influence and material. The shadows the lost cast over society in the annuals of time. A message that comes from the same place as my stories from The Endless Chronicles - shards of remembrance made whole by the imagination of the souls they touch. Back to the spirit of the underground. - Tengushee @Tengushee =============================================================================== _ ___ _ _ __________ :_/// (_: | | | . .|.............................. | | ..:.......... | : :.: !: | _____ ______ .____. ______ _____ _______ _______ :: . __ _\ __/_\_ /__|_ |_\ /__ _\ __/__\ _/_\ _/__ _ :. _\ / / __/ | / / _\ \__ \__ :: . / / \| | / / / :: : _ _______/ /\____\____|___/______________________________ _ .: | /___\tGø : PrAiSE EriS :: ______ _____ _______ ____. ______ /\ ______ ______ _____ _::___ _ _\ /_\ /__ \ _ \/ \__\_ /_(__)_\ /__\ /_ _\ __/_\ _/_ _ \_/ _ / / / \ / / \_/ / / _\ \__ . \ / / \ _/_ \/ / \ / / _ _:________/ /\_____\___/____._/ /\__________________/_____________:.__ __ | /___\ :/___\ :: : | ..:: | | : | . ..|....................................: |_ \ _____________| )__________\\\ : \ www.endless-chronicles.com -o- All that I tell you is true =============================================================================== Got something to say?
